It gained fame in 1552, when captain István Dobó with only 2,100 men occupation successfully defended the city against an overwhelming force of about 80,000 Turks, thus temporarily stopping the advance of the Ottoman Empire in Europe. With many events, the castle is an important cultural center for the city of Eger and its visitors.
