32 European Fortress Summer 2018 www.fortress-summer.eu The water fortress Ziegenhain was one of four Hessian Country fortresses and was built in 1537 by Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous around the village center. In 1539, with the adoption of the „Ziegenhainer Church Water fortress Ziegenhain (DE) Photo: Gerhard Reidt Breeding Order“ and the Confirmation it introduced, a worldwide signal was received from here that has survi- ved to this day. The castle has been used as a prison since 1842 until today. The moat and the 4 ravelins created in the 17th century have been preserved to this day.
