26 European Fortress Summer 2018 www.fortress-summer.eu The fortified ideal city Karlovac (HR) was born on July 13, 1579. The architect and namesake was the Styrian Archduke Karl II. The star of Kar- lovac, the historical center of the city, with its geometric layout and hexagonal bastionary belt, was designed and built by military strategists under the direction of Matija Gambon after the Venetian school. Despite the renovation and reconstruction, the strong destruction of the Croatian war has left its mark on the baroque old town of Karlovac. Karlovac is today an im- pressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture and is affectionately known by its inhabitants as the „City of Many Gardens“.
