By territo- rial transfer to Sweden Fredrikstad became the border region. On the eastern shore of the Glomma the still recognizable star-shaped fortress was therefore built between 1663 and 1666. Today, within these fortified walls, is the charming and well-preserved Old Town (Gamlebyen) of Fredrikstad.
